What is Christian Meditation?
It is a form of silent contemplative prayer that has been practised by the Church since the early centuries. It is a way of going beyond thoughts, words, images and emotions and becoming more aware of the presence of God in the inner depths of our being.
What does it involve?
It involves focusing on a single word or mantra - we recommend the phrase 'Maranatha’, an ancient Christian prayer that means ‘Come, Lord’ - and returning to the word throughout the period of meditation.
Where and when does the group meet?
In St John’s Room at St John's Catholic Cathedral Portsmouth on Monday evenings from 7 to 8 starting on Monday 2nd June 2008. The one-hour meeting includes quiet music, a recorded talk on meditation, 30 minutes of silent meditation, followed by a short time for reflection and questions.
There is also an opportunity for a time of quiet and reflection in St John’s Chapel on Saturday afternoons from 5-5.30pm. You are welcome, whether this form of prayer is new or familiar to you.
